July 24, 2026 – The City of Laguna Woods will release a public review draft of its objective design standards for commercial development on Friday, July 31, 2026.
The objective design standards are intended to guide the future construction and renovation of businesses, gas stations, office buildings, restaurants, shopping centers, and other commercial properties. Standards will address a range of site and building design characteristics such as accessibility, articulation, height, landscaping, lighting, massing, materials, parking, roof form, and bicycle, pedestrian, and vehicle access.
The objective design standards will apply to future commercial projects; no specific project is under consideration at this time. The objective design standards will not apply to clubhouses, manors, or other properties that are part of Laguna Woods Village, unless those properties are located in a commercial zoning district (e.g., the Laguna Woods Village Community Center).
Interested parties are invited to submit comments on the draft objective design standards from Friday, July 31, 2026 through Friday, August 21, 2026. The draft objective design standards and instructions for providing comments will be available at www.lagunawoods.gov/ODS and Laguna Woods City Hall.
Interested parties are also invited to attend the Laguna Woods City Council meeting on Wednesday, August 12, 2026 at 11 a.m. at Laguna Woods City Hall. An informational presentation will be provided on the draft objective design standards, followed by an opportunity for public comments and City Council discussion.
