Coyotes

Coyotes (Canis latrans) are native to California and can be seen everywhere from densely populated urban areas to more rural, wilderness-type settings. Coyotes are a common sight in Laguna Woods and the surrounding area. While most encounters with coyotes are non-threatening, some problematic coyotes can exhibit aggressive behavior and attack people and pets. Factors that may increase coyote activity in urban areas include, but are not limited to, wildlife feeding and the presence of other “attractants” (e.g., off-leash dogs, dogs on long leashes, and free-roaming cats), human development that encroaches on wilderness areas, and climate-related reductions in wilderness sources of food and water.

Dog Licensing

Every dog four months of age or older is required to be licensed by Laguna Beach/Laguna Woods Animal Services. For more information, please click here to visit the dog licensing website or call (949) 497-3552.

Pet Limit

A maximum combination of three cats and dogs – no more than two of which may be dogs – may be kept in any residence. Residents wishing to keep more than two dogs, or more than a combination of three cats and dogs, must first obtain a private kennel license from Laguna Beach/Laguna Woods Animal Services. For more information, please call (949) 497-3552.

Be sure to do your research! Private property owners and homeowners’ associations may have additional rules and regulations regarding the number or type of pets allowed in residences.

Spay/Neuter Requirement
